Jane Eyre is an 1847 classic novel by Charlotte Bronte. It’s about an orphan girl named Jane who faces many hardships in life, falls in love, and yet still manages to take control of her life in the time period the story takes place. Others may think she is wild, but I think she is an extremely strong and courageous character.

Being one of the greatest and most popular works of English fiction, Jane Eyre got a lot of adaptations since its release.

Jane Eyre (1943)

In Jane Eyre’s 1943 adaptation of Jane Eyre, we get to see a nine-year-old orphan Jane, played by Peggy Ann Garner; sent to a charity school where she experiences harsh childhood and the loss of a friend. As an adult Jane, she becomes a governess for the daughter of the master of Thornfield, Edward Rochester, played by Orson Welles. Jane experiences first love and heartbreak throughout her stay at Thornfield Hall.

Jane Eyre (1983)

In Jane Eyre’s 1983 adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, we get to see the story of Jane played by Zelah Clarke; from her childhood, until she arrives at Thornfield Hall to tutor the daughter of the owner. She finds herself intrigued, attracted, and drawn toward Mr. Rochester played by Timothy Dalton, who seemed dark and sarcastic. This adaptation is most closely adapted than others.

Jane Eyre (2006)

In Jane Eyre’s 2006 adaptation of Jane Eyre, the story starts with orphaned nine-year-old Jane played by Ruth Wilson; being sent to Lowood Institute, a residential school for children of limited means after living a miserable life with her aunt. Jane studies hard at Lowood and, eventually finds a position as a governess in Thornfield, the home of Edward Rochester played by Toby Stephens. However, mysterious and odd things keep happening in the house. While deep affection and a passionate romance develop between Jane and Rochester, the secret of the household threatens to keep them apart.

Jane Eyre (2011)

In Jane Eyre’s 2011 movie adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, we see Jane played by Mia Wasikowska as a governess at Thornfield Hall where she meets the dark, cold, and abrupt master of the house, Mr. Edward Rochester played by Michael Fassbender. The two seemingly grow a close bond and form a friendship. Jane soon finds herself falling in love with him. However, Rochester’s terrible secret comes lingering to destroy their happiness.
